A healthier home

The small, high-impact things in your home: the right bedroom temperature for sleep, tap-water hardness, indoor humidity and mould, radon, and ventilation.

Your home shapes how you sleep and feel

You spend most of your life indoors, so the room around you quietly shapes your sleep, your concentration and your health. The good news is that the things that matter most are simple and cheap: a bedroom cool enough to sleep in, air fresh enough to think in, humidity in a healthy band, and — where geology calls for it — a one-off check for radon. None of it requires a renovation.

Each guide below is practical and to the point.

Guides

Bedroom temperature for sleep

A cool room helps you fall asleep and stay asleep. The usual sweet spot is around 16–19 °C.

Tap water and water hardness

In most of Europe tap water is safe and well tested. "Hard" or "soft" is about minerals, not safety.

Indoor humidity and mould

Aim for 30–50% relative humidity. Above 60% invites mould and dust mites; below 30% dries you out.

Radon in the home

An invisible ground gas that builds up indoors in some areas. The only way to know your level is to test.

Ventilation and indoor air (CO₂)

Stuffy air is mostly a ventilation problem. Rising CO₂ tracks it and dents concentration.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single best change for a healthier home?

For most people it is a cooler, better-ventilated bedroom. Sleep drives so much of how you feel, and a cool, aired, dark room is the most reliable environmental improvement to it.

Do I need to buy gadgets?

Mostly no. Airing rooms, drying laundry properly and setting bedding for the season cost nothing. A cheap CO₂ monitor and a long-term radon test kit are the only worthwhile buys, and only the radon test if you are in a higher-risk area.
